General Support of HOPE Cape Town Trust in South Africa

We support HOPE Cape Town Trust, a South African charitable foundation based in the Western Cape, that aims to improve the quality of life of children, young people and their families.

HOPE Cape Town’s work began in 2001 with the explosion of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. They were one of the first organizations permitted to dispense antiretroviral therapy to children, savings thousands of lives. Although the rollout of antiretroviral therapy saved lives, the field of activity quickly expanded with challenges in the social, educational, and early childhood areas.

In addition to the health services at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital and Township Clinics, community-based outreach activities in the temporary resettlement zone Blikkiesdorp were added in 2009. The establishment of a “container village” provided the opportunity to offer a range of innovative educational and therapeutic activities for children, young people, and unregistered schoolchildren on site.

Since that early start in the HIV/AIDS sector, HOPE Cape Town has evolved into a more holistic development agency in different townships, at Tygerberg Academic Health Complex, at the Blikkiesdorp Community Outreach Centre and on their campus in Delft “The Nex – Indawo Yethu” playing an important supportive role for many in the Western Province.

The organization’s holistic care model includes :

At the same time, we are looking to link up with US American companies, NGO’s and entities to collaborate and exchange ideas and programs.

HOPE Cape Town, together with KIDCRU offers a 4 week elective program for international medical students. This elective aims to expose students to the practice and challenges of managing paediatric infectious diseases within Cape Town – and the research and initiatives that seek to improve their management. Students will also gain insight into the non-profit organisations and research units. Numerous  local and international volunteers have helped  grow HOPE Cape Town to the organization it is today. Volunteers have supported a variety of projects. Applicants, both locally and internationally, must want to make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS in underprivileged communities around Cape Town and be willing to commit for a minimum of three months.

Volunteers do not need any specific skillsets, besides a desire to learn and willinginess to help.
